How to Find Planning Opportunities When Reviewing a Tax Return

This course is designed for advisors who have limited to no experience reviewing and gaining key insights from their clients’ tax returns in the financial planning process. The 10 modules in ”How to Find Planning Opportunities When Reviewing a Tax Return ” break Form 1040 into smaller pieces, focusing on foundational tax knowledge as well as how to use a tax return from the financial planning scope to build better conversations with clients. We project about 50% of the course is focused on basic foundational knowledge, while the other 50% is focused on real world client situations and practicing this knowledge through five client case studies.

The Syllabus

The course uses guided video tutorials and interactive skill-building exercises that take advisors from in-depth comprehension of a client’s tax returns to being able to practically apply newly learned principles in planning conversations. The capstone asks advisors to apply their knowledge to two different real-world client scenarios.

CE Credits and Reporting

The course is eligible for 6 hours of Continuing Education for CFP, EA, CPE, IWI and American College certifications, as well as most other relevant certifications. Kitces.com will report CE for CFP, IWI, EA and American College certifications on the 1st and 16th of each month. A completion certificate will be issued so advisors can self-report CPE and other relevant CE. When advisors achieve a passing score of 70% on the Kitces Capstone Interactive Case Study Review at the end of the course, they will be prompted to download their course completion certificates.

Purchasing Multiple Courses for Premier Members and Non-Members

If a Group would like to purchase multiple courses for a mix of Premier and non-Premier Members, they can still receive a bulk discount based on the number of course registrants. The non-members would have the discount applied to the regular course price of $397 while Premier Members will have their discount applied to the Premier Member Course price of $297.

For example, if a Firm purchases 8 courses, and has only 3 Premier Members, then they would qualify for the 20% discount on all course prices, and their invoice would be calculated as follows:

8 Courses = 20% Discount

(5 x Course Price) + (3 x Premier Member Course Price) = Total

(5 x $318) + (3 x $238) = $2275

Can I Purchase a Group Subscription and Multiple Courses?

Yes. Kitces Group Subscriptions allow multiple people at a single advisory firm to enjoy all the benefits of Premier Membership at a discounted group rate, including:

  • Individual member login pages to add CE designations, track quizzes taken and store CE competition certificates
  • Automatic submission of completed continuing education credits directly to IWI, the CFP Board and American College on a semi-monthly basis (the 1st and 16th of the month)
